Ghanaian afrobeats newcomer Jonnie Banton (real name Laryea John Sowah) has released his debut single, “Come Closer”, and if this is his introduction to the world, Ghana has a serious new talent on its hands.

Jonnie Banton’s musical journey began in the mid-nineties, growing up in a community where reggae music was the heartbeat of everyday life.
A trip to the market with his school fees led him to a Buju Banton album (Mr Mansion) and everything changed.
Inspired by legends including Buju Banton, Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Sizzla, Capleton, and Papa San, he began writing his own lyrics and rhythms, quietly honing a craft rooted in dancehall and reggae long before the genre had its current name.
When hiplife swept Ghana and many of his peers shifted styles, Jonnie Banton stayed true to himself; writing music for others for free simply to remain connected to his art.
Come Closer was born from a deeply personal place. “My ex came into my mind, how she used to treat me and the memories we shared, and that inspired the song,” he shares.
Originally conceived around 2002, the record has been patiently waiting for its moment.
Built around a warm Caribbean-laced melody riding an afrobeats rhythm, Come Closer is soothing, unhurried, and effortlessly romantic.
