American actress and producer Viola Davis. The recipient of various accolades, including an Academy Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, and two Tony Awards, The only African-American to achieve the Triple Crown of Acting, has made a stunning transformation in the new trailer for ‘The Woman King’, in which she plays Nanisca, Leader of the all-female warriors known as the Agojie. Based on true events, the film follows General Nanisca and the fighters who protected the Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s as she trains the next generation of warriors in order to defend themselves against invading colonialists’ attacks.

The trailer for The Woman King, which plays out against a backdrop of Beyonce’s “My Power” shows Davis Nanisca rallying the Agojie as they prepare to fight for their home.

The Agojie warriors, sometimes referred to as the Dahomey Amazons, were an all-female army that protected the Kingdom of Dahomey in West Africa, modern-day Benin, from the 17th century until their disbandment in the late 19th century. Their army was known for their fearless defence of their kingdom from threats both near and far.

Many Ghanaians on social media are drawing parallels between the story of Nanisca and Yaa Asantewaa since the trailer was released. Yaa Asantewaa was a Ghanaian warrior queen, born around 1840, who rose up to lead an army against the invading British.
